Should I Use 3D Noise Reduction in Camera?

As all we know the noise is an unavoidable by-product of amplifiers in security cameras. Video “noise” is the form of “static” which creates a foggy haze, speckles, and fuzz that makes the image on your surveillance camera unclear in low-light conditions. Noise reduction is absolutely necessary if you want a quality clear image in low-light conditions, and it becomes more and more important as resolutions are now pushing past 4MP and 8MP.

There are two prominent noise reduction methods in the market. The first is a temporal noise reduction method called 2D-DNR, and the second is 3D-DNR which is spatial noise reduction.

2D Digital Noise Reduction is one the most basic methods used to eliminate noise. Although it is successful in getting rid of noise in images, it doesn’t do a great job in higher resolutions and when there’s a lot of motion around.

2D DNR is considered a “Temporal Noise Reduction” technique. What happens is that each pixel on each frame is compared to the pixels on the other frames. By comparing the intensity values and colors of each of these pixels, it is possible to develop algorithms to detect a pattern that can be categorized as “noise.”

3D-DNR is different as it is “spatial noise reduction”, which compares pixels within the same frame on top of frame-to-frame comparison. 3D-DNR removes the grainy fuzzy appearances of low light images, will handle moving objects without leaving tails behind, and in low light, it makes an image clearer and sharper compared to no noise reduction or 2D-DNR. 3D-DNR is essential to producing a clear image from your security cameras on your surveillance system.

3D noise reduction (3D DNR) monitoring camera can find out the location of noise and gain it by comparing and screening the images of the front and back frames Control, 3D digital noise reduction function can reduce the noise interference of weak signal image. Since the appearance of image noise is random, the noise of each frame image is not the same. 3D digital noise reduction by comparing several adjacent frames of images, the non-overlapping information (namely noise) will be automatically filtered out, using 3D noise reduction camera, image noise will be significantly reduced, the image will be more thorough. Thus showing a more pure and delicate picture. In the analog high-definition monitoring system, ISP noise reduction technology upgrades the traditional 2D technology to 3D, and adds the function of frame to frame noise reduction on the basis of the original intra-frame noise reduction. Analog HD ISP has greatly improved the functions of wide dynamic image and so on. In terms of wide dynamic processing, analog HD ISP also implements the interframe wide dynamic technology, so that the details of the light and dark parts of the image are clearer and closer to the actual effect seen by human eyes.

Regardless of the source, digital video noise can seriously degrade the visual quality of the footage. Video with less apparent noise usually looks better. One possible way to achieve that is to use the in-camera noise reduction when available. Another option is to apply noise reduction in post-processing.

In the camera industry, 3D noise reduction technology will undoubtedly become a mainstream trend in the future When analog high-definition monitoring products came out, ISP noise reduction technology found a place. In the analog high-definition monitoring equipment, it can be upgraded to the analog high-line camera at a low cost, and the video definition effect can be improved by 30%. This is the advantage of this technology. The 3D digital noise reduction function can enable CMOS HD cameras to obtain the same or even better quality images than the CCD of the same size in the environment of low illumination. Coupled with the high dynamic range of CMOS, CMOS products play an increasingly important role in HD cameras. By reducing the amount of video data through noise-reduced images, and thus reducing the pressure on network bandwidth and storage, there will be no room for analog in the high-definition surveillance market.

In response to this mainstream trend, to meet the needs of more customers for high-quality imaging cameras, Hampo is about to launch a series of camera modules with 3D noise reduction technology, let us look forward to our new product -3D noise reduction camera module comes!
